02- March 26- notes from the sofa

I had my first group of young artists coming to the studio last weekend where they created detailed drawings of the eye using pencil and blending stumps. We also began making a hand made canvas folder to carry artwork. I forgot to take any pictures so must remember next time.

I have been planning some Easter themed craft sessions which will involve lots of mixed media and messy work but also some quieter meditative processes too for younger artists.

I have been working on my next textile design which will need a day or two to rearrange elements before it’s good to go, then I will stretch the fabric over a Victorian chair..

launch of website

I have finally launched the website today and have advertised my first round of workshops. I probably will be tweaking things and moving parts around but it is good to make it public.

I will be uploading images from the workshops as they happen to the journal alongside what I am currently working upon.

It’s exciting finally to be live.

story chair

The Story Chair — work in progress

close up of seat

This chair began life as a tired gold tub chair, its structure weakened by rusted springs and years of wear. It was stripped back to the bare frame, repaired and rebuilt from the inside out. New webbing and springs were added, followed by traditional coir hair padding, then further layers of cushioning to restore its form and comfort. The structure was finished with a final layer of Dacron, ready to receive its new skin.

The original chair

I am currently stretching a soft velvet fabric of my own design over the chair. The imagery is narrative and layered: the back depicts a distant landscape, while the seat shows a close-up view of a pond, a fish moving through reflected light. The reverse of the chair will carry an abstract pattern of water, extending the sense of movement and continuity around the form.

The chair is conceived as a place to sit inside a story — where material, image and craft come together to hold memory, landscape and time.
